Starbucks Canada is officially welcoming the arrival of fall by debuting two new beverages: Maple Pecan Latte and Dark Mocha Frappuccino®.
The new Dark Mocha Frappuccino® consists of coffee, cocoa, with rich chocolaty chips blended with milk and ice. Topped with sweetened whipped cream. What makes this cool beverage doubly delicious? The flavour of chocolate and more chocolate – something we just can’t get enough of. There’s the rich, creamy taste of mocha-flavoured sauce blended with milk. Plus chocolaty chips in every sip. Well deserving of two enthusiastic thumbs up!
While the annual return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte has long-heralded the change in season for many, this year a second fall flavour is sharing the spotlight Starbucks menus nationwide: the new Starbucks® Maple Pecan Latte.

Health Canada is taking the final steps towards a ban on the main source of artificial trans fats in Canada. The department says it is banning partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs), which are the main source of industrially produced trans fats in all food sold in the country. The substances have been under fire for years and the food industry had been phasing them out on a voluntary basis.
The trans fat ban will come into force in September 2018, giving the food industry enough time to find suitable alternatives. After that date, it will be illegal to sell any food containing PHOs. It will apply to all foods sold in the country, including imported products and foods prepared and served in restaurants and food service establishments.
There are 3 main kinds of fat: trans, saturated and unsaturated. Trans and saturated fats are not good for your health. They can increase your risk of heart disease because of how they affect your cholesterol levels. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Canada. Both trans and saturated fats will raise your level of LDL cholesterol. Trans fats will also lower your level of HDL cholesterol.
In the 1990s, Canadians had one of the highest trans fat intakes in the world. Since the early 2000s, Health Canada reduced the trans fat intakes of Canadians through various approaches, including:
- requiring trans fat labelling on packaged food
- setting voluntary targets for trans fat maximum limits in processed foods
- setting up a 2-year program to measure the food industry’s progress to meet the voluntary targets
Heart & Stroke Foundation predict that the ban will reduce the number of heart attacks in Canada and save lives.

McMaster University will become Ontario’s first 100% tobacco and smoke-free campus effective January 1, 2018.
The use of tobacco and all oral smoking devices will be prohibited on the Hamilton campus, inside and on the grounds of the Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington, and at all McMaster-owned properties.
“McMaster is globally recognized for its commitment to innovation and advancing health and societal wellbeing through our research, teaching and community service,” says President Patrick Deane. “A tobacco and smoke-free campus is the next important step towards fulfilling our responsibilities as educators, healthcare professionals and to the communities we serve,” he says.
By designating the campus tobacco and smoke-free the University is creating an environment promoting health and wellness that ensures students, faculty, staff and visitors are not exposed to tobacco and smoking products, including second-hand smoke.
“Tobacco cessation is the single most important change a person can make to improve their overall health,” says Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, Hamilton’s Medical Officer of Health. “Stopping tobacco use and not being subject to second-hand smoke help prevent chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke and cancer while improving quality of life. McMaster is congratulated on taking this very important and meaningful step.”
Tobacco and smoke-free environments are effective at motivating people towards quitting; starting in September a variety of free cessation programs and resources will also be offered to all members of the McMaster community.
“This change will have different implications for the diverse communities across our campus. As we all manage this transition, it is important that the University’s resources cater to the cultural and mental wellbeing of these communities, and that everyone is aware of these supports throughout this process,” says Ryan Deshpande, Vice President Education, McMaster Students Union.

Roots Canada wants to take its company public as it plans a massive North American and international expansion over the next several years. For the fashion retailer, the switch from being a private company for more than four decades comes against a challenging retail environment that’s seen numerous bankruptcies, and mass store closures and layoffs in recent years.
The company has more than 100 stores in Canada as well as four in the United States, partner-operated locations in Taiwan and China and an online retail business. In its filing with securities regulators, Roots said it wants to continue its grow in Canada as well as the United States and in international markets.
