The federal government is making some key changes to the rules governing parental leave in Canada. Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jean-Yves Duclos made the announcement yesterday in Ottawa, confirming that the updated rules will come into effect on December 3 2017.
New parents will be able to choose between 12 months or 18 months of combined maternity and parental leave. If they choose 12 months, the system will mostly remain the same. New birth moms and surrogates will still be eligible for 15 weeks of maternity benefits, with federal employment insurance providing them with 55% of their average weekly salary (up to a maximum $543 a week). After those 15 weeks of maternity leave, any parent or caregiver opting for the old 12-month system can take 35 additional weeks of parental leave.
Furthermore, pregnant women can start claiming the maternity benefit 12 weeks prior to their due date, up from the current eight weeks. To be eligible for maternity and/or parental benefits, you must have worked 600 insurable hours in the 52 weeks leading up to your claim.
What do you think of the new parental leave rules?

Vantage Foods (ON) Inc. is recalling ground lean veal from the marketplace due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. Consumers should not consume the recalled product described below.
The following product has been sold in Food Basics supermarket locations in Ontario.
What you should do
Check to see if you have recalled products in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.
If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.
Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea. In severe cases of illness, some people may have seizures or strokes, need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis or live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
Starting on February 1st 2018, both PC Plus and Shoppers Optimum will be no more. They are merging both programs into a new PC Optimum program. Often rumoured, this has now been confirmed with leaflets showing up in stores and the story being covered by major news outlets.
On February 1st, all of your Optimum Points and PC Plus Points will be converted at their full value. But the value will depend on your level, as 8000 points is worth $10 to Shoppers Drug Mart and not the $16 you could redeem points for at higher levels.
Collectors will then use a single card or app and continue to earn points on money spent at Shoppers and PC stores like No Frills, Loblaws and RCSS. Personalized offers will be available on your card to use at all stores. I am guessing this means the end of 20x offers, and if Shoppers Drug Mart doesn’t make some major pricing changes to make up for the difference in points, many of us shopping there a lot less.
The new program will use the current PC Plus redemption system. 10,000 points valued at $10, 20,000 points at $20 and so on to a maximum single transaction redemption of $500. Shoppers can use their reward money at any of Loblaw’s nearly 2,500 stores and the company’s websites. You will earn 50 per cent more points for almost every dollar spent at Shoppers Drug Mart locations to help account for the higher number of points needed for each redemption level.
No confirmation yet, but I am hoping this finally means earning per dollar for current PC Plus stores. If you are in Quebec, you can redeem Optimum Points up until May or convert them.
Watch for an email to merge your points starting in 2018!
The hot toy for Christmas 2016 was the unassuming and egg-citing lifelike Hatchimals, a toy that allows you to watch your toy hatch from egg to infancy. This year, we expect that there will be equal demand for these adorable creatures, particularly since there are even more ‘colleggibles’ to choose from in the 2017 selection.
We’ve collected and complied a list of the different species of Hatchimals you can collect, where you can find them (right now that is) and how much they are being sold at each location. We’ll be adding and updating this list as we approach closer to the holiday season and the stock/prices of the popular egg-focused toys begins to drop and/or rise.
