How Long Foods Stay Fresh In Fridge

Source: CBS

It’s easy to put something in the refrigerator and forget about it.

But foods don’t stay fresh in the fridge forever, and the day will come when you take something out and wonder if it’s still good to eat or has gone bad.

On The Early Show Monday, ShopSmart magazine Editor in Chief Lisa Lee Freeman had the lowdown on how long foods last in the fridge.

ShopSmart consulted a panel of experts to determine which foods could be spoiling by just sitting in the fridge.

Freeman says it’s not always the best idea to rely on labels. Some foods don’t have them, and the ones on others can be confusing.

Also, most people don’t realize that once they open certain popular items found in containers or cans, a new freshness clock starts ticking.

So, it’s important to know which foods have a shorter lifespan once placed in the fridge.

If items that have been sitting in the fridge too long are eaten, they can lead to food poisoning and, in some cases, serious health problems.

BABY FOOD: LASTS 1 – 3 DAYS IN FRIDGE ONCE OPENED

An open jar of strained fruits and veggies lasts two-to-three days in the fridge. Opened cooked meat and vegetable combos need to go after a day or two. Meat and veggie combos should go after two days, tops. The bottom line: Don’t leave open jars of baby food in the fridge longer than three days. A hidden danger with baby food is that parents may feed babies right out of the jar, so saliva transferred to the jar can promote bacterial growth when placed back in the fridge. If you’re using a jar more than once, make sure you portion out what you’re going to use, so the dirty spoon doesn’t go back into the jar.

Spice Girls Reunion Concert in Vancouver

Spice Girls Reunion Concert in Vancouver

Spice Girls Reunion only Canadian Concert in Vancouver

Not that I’d attend a Spice Girls concert, but it’s interesting to note that British Columbia once again beat Ontario (see Simpson’s Kwik-E-Mart) in exclusively hosting an International event. Vancouver will actually be the first city they play in so it’ll get massive coverage!

If you want the Spice Girls to play at another Canadian city, say Toronto or Montreal you can vote here.

Bottled Water in Canada

Bottled Water in Canada

This has been all over the news but just in case you haven’t heard about it yet, Aquafina water bottle labels will be changed to spell out that the drink comes from the same source as tap water. Dasani also comes from tap water and is then purified. I’d like to compile a list of all bottled water brands sold in Canada and their water source. Note that this may be different from the US. For example Nestle Pure Life comes from Aberfoyle Spring Water in Canada but tap water in US. So please make sure the info you mention is relevant to Canada.

I’ll update the list and add more details as I get comments. Also please correct me if I’m wrong.

Pepsi Co Aquafina – purified tap water from Mississauga

Coca Cola Dasani – tap water from Brampton filtered 5 times

Nestle Pure Life – Aberfoyle Spring Water

Danone Evian – Spring Water

Montclair – from Cedar Valley Springs, Erin, Ontario, Canada – Natural Spring Water

FIJI Water – Artesian well in the Yaqara Range of the Nakauvadra Mountains

Ice River Springs – Natural Spring Water
It says source situated in Feversham, Grey Country, Ontario
Strangely, this water tastes sweet.. There’s no sodium in it.

… others?

Thanks to Kaylakat, adora, Sirop, Lili  helping me out 🙂

Here’s an interesting article about bottled water

McDonald’s Mondays

Don’t forget to check out Jim Squires’ enjoyable McDonald’s Mondays at Fjetsam.com. Today he posted a video of Optimus Prime ordering a chicken chalupa at a McDonald’s drive through.

Dear Subway, Please Use Your Isosceles Cheese Correctly

I came across this letter on digg and couldn’t stop laughing 🙂

Come on guys, you got the putting calories on the menu thing right. Now, let’s try draping the calories across the sub in a geometrically satisfying pattern, the one that fulfills the design destiny intended by your sandwich scientists. Spurn not their legacy.

Coke.. Back to the Basics

Coke.. Back to the Basics

After continuously adding more and more ribbons, splashes, swooshes and fake water droplets over the years, Coke has decided to go back to the original simple classic design. Although some people will find the original design too plain, I think it’s a wise move and I personally like the simpler look more. Let’s just hope they don’t start adding new ribbons all over again.

McDonald’s Mondays: McPrayer

mcthailand.jpg

It’s funny how some images can mean one thing to one person and another thing to another. Take this Ronald statue from Thailand located right next to the drive-thru. I’m willing to bet that from the time of imagination to the time of production and placement, not one Thai citizen thought that Ronald McDonald standing with his hands clasped together would ever be considered offensive — and yet if you were to put this outside a North American McDonald’s, a lot of Christians would be up in arms!

Funny little world, isn’t it?

Tim Hortons will Accept Master Card and Eventually other Credit Card Payments in Canada

Tim Hortons will Accept Master Card and Eventually other Credit Card Payments in Canada

It’s about time! Tim Horton’s, welcome to the 21st century!

Finally Timmy’s will (or has already at some locations)  start accepting payments other than cash.  I’ve lost count of the number of times that I avoided Tim Horton’s simply because I didn’t have enough cash on me. I’m usually the guy in front of you in line at the grocery store express checkout, paying for my two items with a debit/credit card 😛 Tim Horton’s was almost the only reason I carried around cash. I personally welcome this change but I also understand why some might resent it. I can imagine how this change may slow down paying and lead to long lineups during the morning breakfast rush, especially when some people take forever to sign their credit card or enter their pin. We’ll see how well this new system goes. In the meantime the first and only electronic payment method will be Master Card. If you don’t have one you can apply for President Choice’s free Master Card. It comes with additional benefits such as point towards grocery shopping, etc.

How creative and unique! If all ads were of that quality we wouldn’t need TiVo.

McDonald’s Mondays: Karaoke!

mckaraoke.jpg

Disappointingly, I don’t have something funny to offer for this weeks McDonald’s Monday — just something really really cool. Lot’s of different regions have different promotions and events, and in Hawaii? Some McD’s have Karaoke Night. How cool/bizarre is that?

It seems like the perfect combination — now that I think about it, I don’t think I could ever croon old Duran Duran tunes again without the smell of a Big Mac wafting in the air.

What about your local McDix? Do any of your stores have wild and wacky promotions or events?

McDonald’s Mondays is a weekly series of posts written by our own Jim Squires that initially appears on his pop culture blog fjetsam.com.
