The new, cheaper options for cable subscribersĀ have been revealed this week, and many customers are less than thrilledĀ with what their $25 (or thereabouts) will get them. What seemed like a godsend when it was announced last yearĀ has, in preliminary reviews, turned into a bit of a boondoggleāmany people are finding that their bills will goĀ up, not down, if they opt in to the new “basic” packages, as the most in-demand channels are frequently spread across multiple small bundles. And as the CBC pointed out, many critics of the new rules foresaw this problem before any plans were even announced:
Some critics of the new regime say consumers may end up paying more for fewer choices, depending on how the cable companies bundle and price individual channels or packages of channels.
And some specialty broadcasters worry they’ll be left out in the cold if their signals aren’t bundled with popular or must-have choices.
On top of that, the $25/month minimum plan does not include hardware, which for some providers is required technology. Rogers customers, for instance, will need to add a $12.95 monthly fee for rental of their “Nextbox”. Bell subscribersĀ will have to meet a significant minimum monthly cost in order to have their $15/month PVR fee waived, though there is the option of purchasing the unit at a cost of $499.
Worse yet are the one-time installation fees and lengthy contracts, which will lock customers in to specific plans for up to 2 years. Some providers are even requiring a bundled internet package. All these costs add up toĀ hefty final bills, and customers who were hoping these additional regulations wouldĀ offer reasons to keep the cord un-cut are being forced to reconsider their options.
Cable companies won’t necessarily have to offer “pick-and-pay”, orĀ a la carte options until December. Until then, there’s always Netflix, Hulu, and the old fashioned antenna.
Rexall, one of Canada’s largest pharmacy chains, is about to change hands at the end of the year to American health firm McKesson for a hefty sum of $3 billion. The acquisition comes just a few years after Shoppers Drug Mart was taken overĀ by Loblaws for $12.4 billion, and it seems as though this deal has been in the making for a while. One of the main indicators of this change comes from the hiring of new CEO, Jurgen Schreiber, who was previously the CEO of Shoppers. He was the chief executive of Shoppers between 2007-2011 and came to Rexall in August 2015. The Loblaws takeover of Shoppers gave Rexall’s number one competitorĀ a huge boost as its buying power and investment had increased.
While losing market share, Rexall Canada made some changes by replacing its navy and orange signature logo colours to an aqua blue, by heavily investing in its home brand Be Better, and by redesigning more than 50 of its stores. When the acquisition is finalized by the end of the year, hopefully the company will see more growth and discover its own competitive edge in Canada.
Quick facts about Rexall and Shoppers:
Shoppers was founded in 1962 in Toronto.
Rexall (the Canadian operation) has been in Canada since 1985 but is originally an American chain established in 1903.
Shoppers has roughly 2,300 corporate, franchised and associate-owned stores and approximately 1,800 pharmacies.
Rexall has about 470 drugstores across the country.
Shoppers was acquired by Loblaws in March 2014.
Rexall will be acquired by the end of 2016 by McKesson.
The Shoppers deal was worth $12.4 billion.
The Rexall deal will be $3 billion.
Shoppers helped Loblaws double its profit after the takeover.
