Over the past few weeks we’ve had some posts letting people know about the Annual $5 T-shirt Sale at Threadless.com. While the deals were good (and still are — the sale continues!), a number of our readers have come back and commented about the outrageous customs fees they were required to pay at the door.
To the best of my knowledge, the commenters that have been saying it is a UPS-related issue are dead right. Of all the deliveries I receive from the states each year, only the ones from UPS seem to come with a mountain-sized customs fee. I once ordered a $30 bag from Manhattan Portage and had to pay $45 in customs. It was BEYOND outrageous. That’s why I go out of my way to avoid UPS whenever possible.

Threadless offers four shipping choices — two through UPS, and two through the US Postal Service. While it’ll be slower and without a tracking number, you’ll most likely avoid the customs fee by choosing the “Postal” options. I’m cheap, so I went economy anyways. My first order hasn’t arrived yet, so I can’t confirm for a fact that no customs fees occur through this method. From my understanding and past experience with other US companies though, it’s the safest bet.
My apologies to all of you that have incurred customs fees. If it makes you feel any better I’ll likely be fighting with a UPS driver today over fees from a Christmas purchase unrelated the Threadless later today. I ordered it from a .ca site, so why the heck is it coming UPS from Colorado?? We are not amused.
As far as Threadless shipping goes, they’ve just upgraded their sale again to include a $7 discount for postal economy shipping on international orders over $50. The sales been on a while now, so this is probably the last bump up in savings they’ll offer before they take the whole thing down.

Until December 12th receive a collectable 2008 snowglobe at Sears.ca beauty with a $75 women’s or mens fragrance purchase online. I just happened to be browsing their beauty section looking for gifts and came across this little gem gwp.
*while quantities last. Please see site for other details, and or exclusions.

I thought if would be a good idea with the holiday shopping season in full force to list the stores online or box, that will price match items if you find it advertised cheaper elsewhere. Some offer the full difference and 5-10% on top of that. Each have their own conditions and generally are found in store or in the “help” or “customer service” section of the website.
If you know of any please post and I’ll update my list as we go!

Not the first time we’ve mentioned it here at SmartCanucks, but tomorrow brings the long-awaited DVD launch of The Dark Knight. If you haven’t seen it, you really need to. I never thought the word “masterpiece” could be applied to a comic book movie, but if any had ever earned the title it’d be this one. Heath Ledger gave the best performance of the year, hands down. So when I came across this Heath Ledger as the Joker as Ronald McDonald pic? I couldn’t resist.
Don’t forget — Select Empire Cinemas’ are doing a screening tonight that comes with a DVD of the movie, and Blockbuster will be open from midnight ’til 1am to sell copies at $17.99 a pop. That price is good tomorrow as well, but after that it’ll jump to normal.

Yes I know this isn’t a politics blog and I’m really not into politics either, but I can’t help but notice the chaos going on behind who should be Canada’s Prime Minister. I’m not with or against the coalition since I don’t know enough details to choose a side. I just find it strange that we cannot choose who we want as our leader in a fair democratic process. US citizens got to vote for who they would like to become their leader, why can’t we do the same?
I also don’t understand why we wasted our time voting if the results meant nothing? and how on earth can a parliment do nothing for over 2 months (not to mention the time wasted during the elections) and maintain a leading role in the world and a strong local economy?

Thanks Katie & jpottawa for posting this Smoofer coupon code in the Canadian Shopping Deals and Flyers section 😀
If you’re interested in funky looking Tees like the Threadless T-Shirts you’ll probably love this deal from Smoofer.com! Use coupon code holiday to save 15% on Smoofer.com’s T-Shirts.
Smoofer is a Canadian company that sells licensed T-Shirts. I don’t think the T-Shirts are actually made in Canada but hey they’re trying and at least their warehouses are located in Canada not the US. As for pricing, most T-shirts are $19 so after the 15% discount they’ll cost $16.15. Shipping is free and they ship to everywhere in Canada. I’d say this is a pretty good deal although I would have liked to see more designs. But they’re new so let’s give them a chance and a thumbs up for trying.
Update: Smoofer staff left the following comment on the blog 😀
WOW….great support for SMOOFER.com
Next 3 people to buy a shirt from our site, and use PROMO code “canucks†(without the quotes and in lower case) will get 20% OFF.

Just in case you don’t know what K’nex is, it is a toys building system that consists of interconnecting plastic rods and connectors to form all kinds of contraptions. K’NEX is a construction toy, and therefore in the same genre as LEGO and Meccano. However, unlike LEGO it focuses more on the structural intergrity and load handling of the structure rather than the design.
