Tropicana is Increasing their Prices

Reviews / Canada

Tropicana makes one of the best not from concentrate orange juices out there and what I love about this brand is that I can basically get a great tasting orange juice even though I’m so darn picky about pulp!

My mom likes the extra pulp version where as I can simply do with out pulp all together. To me it feels like I’m drinking a glass of hair instead of orange juice….gross!

Tropicana has announced that due to the weather Florida experienced this winter a lot of the oranges were not usable for making orange juice. So, surprise-surprise, we’re going to be experiencing a price increase on the larger bottles while the smaller bottles will be down sized but the price will remain the same.

While I would normally pay more for a product that I like a lot I’m not sure I can justify spending the additional money on orange juice considering there are other brands that offer a lot of the same qualities (pulp free, calcium enriched, not from concentrate etc.,)

If you’re a Tropicana fan how will this affect you?

Will you switch to another brand or will you continue to shell out for this brand?

Can you suggest a different brand of OJ that’s just as good?

we get minute maid low acid. Tropicana is too expensive already.

  2. Radeyah says:

Yea, minute maid is great! Agree with Sally!

  3. The_Scarecrow says:

I’ll watch for OJ freebie coupons and wait for sale days…. I’ll see how much more expensive it gets before I decide not to get it, I’ll also water it down a bit because it’s very sweet.

I was devoted to Tropicana for over 10 years until I discovered SIMPLY ORANGE. I was really surprised when I discovered that it was a Minute Maid product. When I think of Minute Maid, I think of those concentrated frozen canned juices I see in the bunkers at the grocery store. This one comes in a 1.75 L clear plastic bottle. It’s 100% pure and natural (also not from concentrate, comes in pulp, no pulp, etc.) I love it! It tastes like it was freshly squeezed. I found Tropicana to be tart and somewhat sour. It’s cheaper to pick it up at Food Basics, $3.99. Loblaws and Longos sells it for $4.49.

  5. 1lovetoshop says:

i love simply orange as well

  6. Khristopher says:

Oasis orange juice is better than Tropicana. Sweeter even! Not from concentrate. And cheaper!

  7. mom2twobeauties says:

I love Tropicana as well but have found a great substitution, Simply Orange, it is amazing in taste and the price is very reasonable

  8. seapotato says:

there are 0.75 simply orange coupons too!! lol

  9. FreebieChick says:

Yeah, Tropicana is expensive as it is let alone having to pay any more.

  10. Brittany says:

It’s just a lame excuse for the company to bump up the prices to make more money. If the Florida oranges this year were not good enough, than why aren’t the other orange juice companies bumping up their prices?? I personally liked their extra pulp orange juice, although many people don’t like to chew on their juice hahah. But with the prices being bumped up I sure as heck won’t purchase their product unless I have a coupon.

  11. Shaunah says:

Simply Orange is amazing! I don’t like orange juice, but I bought Simply Orange for a fruit salad a while back and found it’s the only orange juice I actually like : )

  12. Justine says:

We buy tropicana, it’s expensive I guess, but it’s on sale frequently, so for me, nothing will really change.

And I have to always have juice in my fridge, and there is always orange juice, 80% of the time, it’s tropicana. I drink it everyday.

  13. Tina says:

I love love love simply orange its great and thier apple juice is really really good as welll

  14. hogama says:

I’m a Minute Maid OJ drinker. Their refrigerated cartons come in no pulp (I totally agree with you and hate pulp in my OJ!), extra pulp, low acid, added calcium, etc, etc… But I like ‘Original’. I’ve never seen coupons for it… Maybe if I can find the Simply Orange coupons, I’ll give that a try. (Thanks for the advice!)

  15. hogama says:

oh….. forgot to add…. I don’t like Tropicana at all! :p The generic store brands and very good as well… (ie: Co-op Gold for example is very good)

  16. kduever says:

I usually just get whatever is the best value (usually the store brand). Most of it comes from the same factories anyway…

and they all taste great with vodka 🙂

  17. Old Broad says:

I buy Allens … both orange and apple juice. I usually get the small bottles for the orange juice and the bi tins for the apple juice. There are often great sales on both.

  18. spunkiest69 says:

I really like Tropicana, but I cannot justify spending more $ on a product that is already way too expensive in my opinion…Minute Maid OJ is just as good so I guess I’ll start buying more of it instead 🙂

  19. sdab says:

Our household switched over to Simply Orange about 6 months ago, and there is no going back. It’s the best you can get without squeezing the oranges yourself.

  20. mist_ynight says:

I’ve never been a fan of Tropicana. I like Beatrice orange juice and I agree with some of the above posters, Simply Orange is very good too. Simply Orange is the only o.j. my father will buy.

  21. gudeitaimu says:

I usually just buy the best value ones:) And I drink most of the juice half half (half juice and half water)…Most of the juice tastes too sweet.

  22. MagicalDreams says:

With the loss of Oranges in Florida this year, my guess is that all Orange Juices are going to go up in price. Even if a company isin’t using Florida oranges, the cost of oranges are going to go up! Tang anyone?!?

  23. Abby says:

I’ve had a glass of Tropicana every morning with breakfast for as long as I can remember, so I don’t think I’ll be making a switch. Usually it’s on sale somewhere near me. I drink the ‘with pulp’ kind.

For anyone who drinks a lot of this stuff, Costco sells a 4-pack of Tropicana cartons; which sometimes doesn’t beat the sale price per carton at the grocery store, but it usually beats the going regular price.

  24. CarlyinCanada says:

    Tang ,lol No, thanks! haha

We like Minute Maid OJ no pulp! or even WM’s Great Value OJ is pretty good too…really can’t tell the difference! Sometimes get the frozen MM if on sale…

Looks like alot of stuff is going up!

  25. Raphael says:

Tropicana is usually on sale at at least one of the big grocery store chains every week. Just move around.

  26. linny says:

I like the dole refrigerated oj. It’s pretty good juice. I prefer it over the oasis OJ. I find Oasis juice is not as sweet and leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

  27. meguwo says:

Simply Orange and Apple are THE BEST! I found the $.75 coupons at Metro, and you can use them on the 400ml bottles! I paid $.85 for a “to-go” style bottle of Simply Orange 🙂

Wal-Mart also has the HUGE jugs on for $4.97!

  28. meguwo says:

(adding to above comment) Tropicana large jugs are at least $7.00. Not a fan of Tropicana- Simply Orange FTW!

    • Justine says:

I got a giant jug of tropicana for $7 at rcss a few days ago, like the big ones that you got struggle to carry. Prices for everything go up after a while… it’s how the way things work. Big deal.

  29. mtlyorel says:

    1. Squeeze your own fresh juice.
    2. Oasis 100% non-concentrated OJ

  30. sweetmomma says:

Minute Maid & Oasis are my two favs. Tropicana is usually a treat and only when its on sale.

  31. Martha says:

Just bought a new o.j. today at the Superstore. Found PC Blue Menu o.j. with a lot less sugar and fewer calories than regular o.j. I know that the amount in sugar is o.j. is a problem and this one only has 9 g of sugar, compared to about 23 g in regular o.j. It was $3.99 and actually tastes quite good. Think I’ve found a new orange juice!

  32. AleX says:

Guys, guys, guys. Forget about Tropicana Orange Juice. Buy a good extract juicer (I suggest Breville_Ikon Multi-Speed Juice Fountain) and then enjoy 100 % real fruit juice. I just had one right now. The recipe: one Florida orange, one blood orange, one grapefruit and one lemon. With Breville juicer and this recipe you will have 3 full glasses of excellent juice.

  33. Donna Vieira says:

Nope. Living as close as we do to the US border, we shop at Wegman’s in Buffalo, no taxes. And it’s perfectly legal. If enough Canadians do so, maybe it will sink in that Canadian grocery stores charge too much for their produce.

  34. Caroline says:

My son will only drink the Compliments brand of pulp free juice and he used to drink Tropicana. It is much cheaper and can be found at Sobey’s.

  35. Jaime says:

I don’t drink Orange Juice, but my husband does and he said Simply Orange is fantastic!!! He couldn’t believe it wasn’t from concentrate! And it was really reasonably priced! Wal-mart carries the huge jug for $4.97 (it lasted my daughter and husband 2 weeks)

  36. crazycoupongirl says:

nothing beats tropicana oj .. but i don’t see it on sale that often to justify spending what they want for it. i would ofcourse if i didn’t have a bf that drank it like water and usually within a few days so i don’t buy it anymore.. i only get it if i have a coupon or its on sale..

i really like simply orange it taste great and i do use the coupons when i catch it on sale for 2.99 so it’d be only 2.25 so great deal

i also like minute maid oj too its also great.. and i had coupons for those as well

i have tried many oj brands since starting to use coupons last year and find that they all are OK substitutes .. but if u are on a budget tropicana just won’t cut it when your trying to make ends meet!

id say best one is minute maid simply orange!

  37. Jessy says:

If you’re a Tropicana fan how will this affect you?
I won’t buy their juice anymore. It’s already expensive enough.

Will you switch to another brand or will you continue to shell out for this brand?
I’m gonna buy from Simply Orange, their orange juice is AMAZING!

Can you suggest a different brand of OJ that’s just as good?
    Simply Orange : )

  39. honeydoo says:

i buy it in Buffalo too, it’s like 2.50, at most. for 1 family member who drinks it, one a month is enough.

  40. Penny says:

This is one of those times I’m positive it is NOT an excuse to raise prices nor is it just another way to screw you out of money.

I just got back from over a month long stay in Florida with my snowbird parents and it is grim down there kids. They were calling for hard frosts almost every night and I was there 6 weeks and there was perhaps 7 days of 70 degree weather, the rest of the time it was 50’s in the daytime and 30-20 at night. Oranges are a winter crop in tropical areas but all of the groves that I drove by were bare or the oranges had prematurely fallen from the trees due to frost.

Other products from florida are probably going to go up as well, like tomatoes, strawberries etc. The other main source of produce for Canada is Chile so unless their huge earthquake harmed their farms we’ll be getting things from there for the season. Resaurants have already rationed their tomatoes in Ontario, you don’t get one on your burger unless you ask for it where I live.

As for OJ, I don’t drink it often but I knew when I saw this thread someone would go to the ‘corporations are trying to screw us’ stand and although most of the time that is true I just wanted you to know from someone who has witnessed the crop failure first hand that this time that is not the case. Cheers!

  41. Steph (esbee) says:

I also like the Minute Maid / McCain OJ. It’s like $2.39 per 2L

  42. Fanny says:

Jessy is right, Simply Orange is the best orange juice I’ve ever tasted!!
It has such a sweet taste and has no added sugar…
    Simply the best!!

  43. Jenn says:

While there’s none other than Tropicana…. President’s Choice Valencia OJ is really really good. 🙂

  44. noy says:

My family use to drink Tropicana as we thought it was the best tasting orange juice until we tried Simply Orange. Tropicana was on sale last week and we bought some and everyone in the house thought it tasted bitter. So never again will we sway to the dark side. We are now faithful Simply Orange drinkers.

  45. CarlyinCanada says:

Wait until the HST comes in in Ontario! Everything will cost more!

  46. Paula says:

absolutely SIMPLY ORANGE!! It’s way better than tropicana!

  47. Sarah says:

I LOVE the PC Pulp free OJ! And it’s not expensive! I’m one of those super picky orange juice drinkers and the PC brand is my personal fav. It’s worth a try!

  48. Catherine says:

I used to drink 1 glass of Tropicana every morning but gave it up when I started getting acid reflux- my boyfriend still drinks it but he makes it last longer by combining it with club soda- gives it a bit of fizz, tastes really good and makes the juice last longer. Reminds me of my favourite drink of all time- ORANGINA!

  49. M says:

Simply orange is a great choice, tastes really good!

  50. Jerry Hung says:

I have bought 10+ Minute Maid OJ from Price Chopper for the last month

Low Calcium, Low Pulp, Lots of Pulp – 1.89L – all for $2, for the last month

  51. Jordan says:

not true oj I guess but Five-Alive is where it’s at..

  52. citrusgouged says:

So, can we assume that once they recuperate thier losses they will return to regular prices and return the bottles to their original sizes ???
For some reason that logic NEVER works in the reverse.
    GOUGE !!!!

  53. Deb says:

Ill have to agree with many of the posters on here as well. SIMPLY ORANGE is by far the best OJ & an excellent deal! We go to Cuba quite frequently & I love their orange juice. They put the entire orange thro the machine…and it all goes into your glass. Mmmmm Mmmm Mmmmm True OJ with no additives. SIMPLY ORANGE is very much like the OJ I love so much in Cuba. Nothing like fresh squeezed OJ & SIMPLY ORANGE is it!!

  54. kate says:

ha ha what citrusgouged said is funny. Tropicana has miles and miles of orchards in Florida up near Disney land so thats the only place where they grow oranges for their juice. im not sure where other companies get them from.

  55. FunkyMunky says:

I will def be switching – I already don’t buy it as often and Minute Maid as well as other brands have been good substitutes.

I became a big fan of smoothies in a bottle by PC

  56. Krissy says:

Depending on what store I’m at or the sales, I tend to grab either President’s Choice Valencia OJ or Simply Orange. After these two all other OJ drinks just taste artificial to me.

  57. Catherine L says:

I find Tropicana tastes way too sour for me. And the price point compared to other brands is ridiculous. Simply Orange is good but so is the Minute Maid not from concentrate. The PC brand orange juice is not bad either and a fair bit cheaper than Tropicana.

  58. Janice says:

Unless you’re squeezing the oranges yourself, I would stay away from orange juice

    http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/24066876/

  59. Bridges_48 says:

The oranges were not affected that bad prices went up $1.00 a box wholesale, heck when your pepsi co you either contract or have your own orchards. it’s just a great excuse to raise the cost of the juice. Pepsi co is famous for this, heck look at your Quaker bars now, smaller box (6) units now, was 8.

Most people have seen increased prices on their produce.

  60. Chris Moore says:

It’s a myth that Tropicana gets its oranges from Florida, and that their juice is fresh. Not from concentrate only means that they didn’t suck the water out and reconstitute it later. It looks like what Tropicana does exactly the opposite of that, they keep the orange water, and suck everything else out, keep it in vats underground for long periods of time, and then reconstitute it by adding in flavor. See the article in the link below.
