American Apparel Canada announced on July 6 that they will be closing an undetermined amount of stores and laying off workers in an attempt to turn around its fortunes.
The cuts will save a total of $30 million US, the company said, though it did not say how many shops or jobs will be affected by these closures. American Apparel has 239 retail locations and a total workforce of around 10,000.
Paula Schneider, chief executive of American Apparel, said the focus now is to remedy problems that caused “steep losses” over the past five years. Over the past few years, American Apparel suffered more than $300 million US in losses, largely under its founder and former CEO Dov Charney, who was forced out by the board of directors last year.
Since taking the reins in January, Schneider has made numerous changes to the brand, including revamping American Apparel’s marketing strategy, remaking the organization’s management structure, and bringing in more stringent forecasting and budgeting processes. So far there’s no word about how many of the store closures and lay offs will affect the Canadian market and it will take some time to see if this new plan is able to save the struggling brand.

Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Symptoms of a Salmonella infection start 6 to 72 hours after exposure to Salmonella bacteria from an infected animal or contaminated product and include vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, fever and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis. Salmonellosis can be deadly to young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Salmonella and other harmful bacterias can normally be killed through proper cooking. It’s advised that you never microwave frozen meat products and instead follow the instructions on the packaging.

A strike is currently underway at 9 Loblaws-owned stores in Southwestern Ontario. At midnight on July 2, workers walked off the job in 3 Zehrs Great Foods outlets in Windsor and another in nearby Kingsville, as well as at 2 Real Canadian Superstore outlets in Windsor and at stores in Chatham, Leamington and Sarnia.
The United Food and Commercial Workers union says 1,600 workers represented by Locals 175 and 633 are involved in this legal strike. Negotiations towards a new contract will resume Thursday.
Members at 50 stores, including 5 Loblaws Great Food Stores in Nepean and Gloucester and 45 stores operating as Zehrs, Loblaws, Great Food, and RCSS throughout central and central north Ontario, ratified their new 6-year agreement. Members covered by a separate agreement at nine Zehrs Great Food and Real Canadian Superstore locations in Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, and Lambton counties voted down the memorandum of settlement, which led to this strike. As many as another 60 stores represented by UFCW Local 1000A are scheduled to go on strike on Sunday in markets from London, Ontario to Ottawa.
“In light of the union’s decision to reject our offer and to strike, we have turned our attention to serving local customers and supporting our colleagues who will continue to serve them in all nine stores,” said Kevin Groh, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Loblaw Companies Limited.
Loblaws says all nine affected stores will remain open, but with modified store hours (10am to 8pm) and a reduction of some in-store services.
In contrast to Loblaws company statements, Shawn Haggerty, President of UFCW Local 175, has said, “We are asking the people in these communities to not shop at the affected stores. These workers are counting on their friends and neighbours for support. Please do not cross their picket lines.”
The union has said the key issues in the dispute are wages, work schedules, benefits and limits on third party providers.

Canada’s Public Health Agency is reminding people to be careful when handling food after a recent salmonella outbreak which has sickened 44 people across Canada has been linked to frozen raw breaded chicken products.
So far, the Public Health Agency has tracked 44 salmonella related cases around the nation, with 28 cases in Ontario, 12 cases in Quebec, 2 in Nova Scotia and 2 in Newfoundland and Labrador. Out of these 44 cases, 12 people have been hospitalized, but fortunately no deaths have been reported.
These individuals have been reported to have fallen ill between February 7 and May 23, 2015. Based on investigation findings, exposure to frozen raw breaded chicken products has emerged as a source of the illnesses. Currently the Public Health Agency is working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and Health Canada as they continue to investigate the outbreak.
Many breaded chicken nuggets, chicken burgers and strips may look like they’re pre-cooked, but they are actually raw and you should handle them as such. Raw meat and poultry can contain harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, however foodborne bacteria such as salmonella can be easily eliminated with through cooking of the meat.
Every year, roughly one in eight Canadians (almost 4 million people) get sick with food poisoning, also known as foodborne illness. Many of these illnesses can be prevented with proper handling and cooking of meat products. The most common symptoms of food poisoning and salmonella illnesses include stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever. Please see a health care professional as soon as possible if you think you have a foodborne illness as it can cause dehydration, and other complications.
The Public Health Agency advises Canadians to take these steps when handling raw frozen breaded chicken products:
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before and after handling raw poultry products.
Use a separate plate, cutting board, and utensils when handling raw poultry products to prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.
Frozen raw breaded chicken products may appear to be pre-cooked, but some contain raw chicken and should be handled no differently than raw poultry products.
Do not eat raw or undercooked poultry products. Cook all frozen, stuffed, breaded or raw poultry products to an internal temperature of at least 74°C (165°F) and cook whole poultry to an internal temperature of 82°C (180°F).
Due to uneven heating, microwave cooking of frozen raw breaded poultry products including chicken nuggets, strips or burgers is not recommended.
Salmonella can affect anyone, but infants, children, seniors and individuals with weakened immune systems are at high risk.
Symptoms of a Salmonella infection start 6 to 72 hours after exposure to Salmonella bacteria from an infected animal or contaminated product and include:
Fever, chills, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea and vomiting.

Lululemon Athletica Canada has recently been forced to recall over 300, 000 tops women’s tops due to injury hazard. So far there have been 5 reported cases of injury to Health Canada and 6 reported cases of injury to Lululemon, as well as an additional 7 reported injuries in the US.
The affected tops were sold for $75 – $260 between January 2008 and December 2014. There are estimated to be approximately 185,000 affected garments sold in Canada either in stores or on Lululemon’s website. There are many styles of garment which include this drawstring, including:

This is the 2nd large scale recall from Lululemon. in 2013 the company pulled a variety of yoga pants from its stores because they became transparent when the wearers bent over.
