Announcements
It’s here! SmartCanucks’ BIGGEST CONTEST GIVEAWAYS EVER! Every single weekday until 2010 I’ll be giving out atleast $100 worth of prizes daily!
After the success of the $10 daily contest giveaways we had earlier this year I decided to kick it up a notch… or ten… by giving out $100 daily instead! Of course I couldn’t afford that kind of money since I’m just a graduate student at Queen’s. So I decided to seek sponsors and I was surprised by the huge amount of interest I got. Many people were interested in sponsoring a contest day that we may end up going into January as well. A couple are from me personally though like the Lululemon one.
This contest is not your typical contest however! It’s fun fast and different! Here’s how it’ll work: Everyday we’ll have a contest and the winner(s) will be announced immediately the next day! There’s also another twist to this contest: You will win what you choose! To enter most contests you’ll need to leave a comment with a list of items you want to get! If you win you get these items for free.
You also have a good chance of winning since no person will be allowed to win more than 2 prizes throughout the span of the giveaways. This means that we’ll end up with loads of winners. Winners will be chosen randomly using random number generator.

SmartCanucks Giveaways Day 1: Lululemon $100 of items free!
Today’s contest is not actually sponsored. I thought I’d make the first day exciting by giving out a prize from a store I know most people on here love! Lululemon!
How do I enter the contest?
Go to Lululemon and choose items up to a maximum of $100 (don’t worry about sizes). Then leave a comment on here with your choices of items.
Contest Rules
- 1 entry per household i.e. you may only leave 1 comment. If you want to discuss anything or share your thoughts please include it in that 1 comment.
- Canada only.
- Contest ends tomorrow November 3rd, 2009 with the announcement of the next contest.
- You may only win a max of 2 contests throughout the whole giveaways event to give others a chance to win.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this giveaways idea when you enter 😀
I wanted to point out that many of the deals and freebies posted on the blog are not just posted by me. We have a brilliant blogging team! A very special thank you goes to Justine and maybe who have been regularly blogging superb deals and keeping us up-to-date, never missing any hot deal!
A special thank you also goes to cheapskate101, itsjustmebub, KittyPaws, Sally, babygonnermann, barginshopper, blueegg and smartnewbie for their awesome blog posts 😀
I also have a huge surprise. I won’t say anything, just check out the blog at 12 noon EST on November 2nd, 2009 😉
The servers on which SmartCanucks run have been having major downtime issues today and especially the forum server. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as possible and I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.
On the bright side… I get to finally use Twitter’s Fail Whale 😉
*ticks one off his bucket list*

Pinecone is expanding again and offering new invites!
PineCone research is growing and we invite you to help! If you have ever told a friend about receiving $5 for doing surveys for PineCone Research, it is likely that they have asked, “How can I join?”
Now you can tell them how to become part of this elite group of households. We are offering select members the opportunity to recommend membership to a friend or relative who is NOT a member of their household.
Do you know of households that would like to join the PineCone Research Panel? If so, please FORWARD A COPY of this email to each household you would like to refer so that they may click on the registration link shown below. That household should complete the registration form themselves and submit it. REMEMBER THAT ONLY ONE PERSON PER HOUSEHOLD MAY REGISTER. Multiple registrations of the same Household will void all registrations.
If you think you’ll qualify please feel free to email Smart Canucks sister site Dealcetera at [email protected] and an invite link will be emailed back to you!
I’m very proud to say this! I’m proud that the SmartCanucks Community, which might not be familiar to many blog readers, has some of the most wonderful, caring and compassionate people ever 😀
Did you know that many SmartCanucks members collect coupons, use them to buy products and donated to shelters around Thanksgiving, Christmas and other times of the year? We have had this as an ongoing activity on SmartCanucks and it puts a smile on my face every time I read about these little special acts of kindness 🙂
I’ll share with you some of the many beautiful contributions over the next few months starting with the most recent:
By: eriluo
As many of you know, I have been collecting stuff using coupons to make up shelter packs for the local women’s shelter in time for Thanksgiving.
Well, today, I finally finished them, as I picked up the last of the products I needed at Wal-mart’s Anniversary sale. I made 12 in all and I couldn’t have done this alone, as I’ve got a little help from my SC’r friends who have donated coupons towards my shelter stash. Thanks all
I called the shelter to let them know I will be deliverying them tomorrow and they were pleased to hear of my donation.
So, without further adieu, here is what is in them, what they look like and the rest of the details…
The finished bags – 12 in all!
A sample of the bags – these have two handles, a drawstring and are cloth mesh, so perfect to put damp toiletries in and hang up to dry out. What’s even better, they were only $1.00 ea. at the dollar store!
12 packs of Kotex pads
12 Cottonelle Travel Wipes
12 Toothbrushes
6 tubes of Arm & Hammer toothpastes
6 tubes of Crest toothpastes
9 cans of Satin Care Shave Gel
3 cans of Skintimate Shave Gel
12 Venus Razors
12 Dove Go Fresh Body Mists
12 Dove Go Fresh Beauty Bars
12 Herbal Essences 2 in 1 Shampoo Conditioner
12 Degree Deodorants
8 Dove Cream Oil Bodywash
4 Aveeno Bodywash
Finally, this is what one of the shelter packs looks like!
Feels good to be done, will feel better to deliver. I figure I probably spent about $10 a bag, but they are probably worth at least $40 each, so I am happy that I could contribute almost $500 worth of products to a worthwhile and deserving cause.
Thanks to Andit for coming up with this awesome idea! Andit created a contact card for us 😀
Inspired by her idea, I created a whole bunch of shopping related templates such as a Shopping List, Price book, member card and many more! I hope you like them!

Less Ink-intense Version
If you’d like me to design other templates please let me know what template you’d like and I’ll work on it 😀

I thought I’d update you guys on what happened in regards to Walmart’s legal threat.
I emailed the lawyer with the letter we prepared (after changing it based on the feedback I got in the comments). I never heard back from them which I think is a good thing. Thank you everyone for your help and support. I think that everyone contacting Walmart Canada and letting them know that SmartCanucks is authentic significantly helped! Here’s a reply Kimable, a SmartCanucks reader, got from Walmart Canada when she emailed them:
Good morning,
We appreciate your concern and the opportunity to respond. The communication sent to Smartcanucks originated from an external law firm in the United States, as part of our global company’s effort to defend customers against the growing incidence of online fraud. Unfortunately, Walmart Canada did not have the opportunity to review the communication before it was sent. We believe it was overzealous. However, we continue to urge customers to be very cautious when assessing online offers bearing Walmart’s name

Debbie

Once again, thank you everyone for your advice and support 😀

So I’m flipping through the October issue of Canadian Living looking for coupons (scan for coupons first, read later) when I see the word ‘coupons’. Upon closer examination I discover that it is an article entitled “Online Coupons” by Deena Waisberg. Hmm, I wonder to myself, what sites does she list? I scan the bolded text box on the bottom right hand side of the page, pretty much assuming it’d be save.ca and the like, and what do I see but – you know what’s coming here don’tcha??? http:smartcanucks.ca !!!!!!!!! Woohoo! That’s Us!! I mean I know it’s Boo Radley (did I mention you’re fantastic!) but collectively it’s us!!!! Right there in print on page 186 of Canadian Living – wooh Boo your name’s going to be in bright lights! (well, your user name anyway ;-p) Congrats SmartCanucks!!
First of all I’d like to thank Koala who took the time and effort to meet with the CTV crew and represent SmartCanucks in the wonderful way she did. I’m looking forward to seeing her interview this Thursday. More details from Koala:
Smart Canucks will be on Canada AM this Thursday July 9 @ 7:45 am EST
and will also air
Thursday July 9 on CTV @ 6 pm EST
( Pat Foran’s segment is usually about 6:20 pm EST)
He says there is a good possibility it will go NATIONAL and the west and east coasts may air this as well, so you will have to check your listings.
Also to add, if the response is good, there will be a follow up.
Here is a little more more info about Pat Foran
More pictures and details about this CTV interview here
I’ve added a new reviews blog on here where you can freely express yourself and share with us your positive or negative store, service or product experience! This reviews blog will be 100% uncensored and 100% unbiased, and no review will be removed even if a company contacts me and asks to have it removed.
- Had a good or bad retail store or shopping experience?
- Got scammed? Cheated?
- Got treated unfairly?
- Had an good, bad or unusual product experience?
You’re at the right place! The Canadian Reviews Blog is where you can freely write about your experience and express yourself without being censored! This is where we, the consumers, bite back on unfair and rude services and reward good ones!
Share your stories and have other readers comment, give you advice and help you out!
Click here to visit the reviews section and submit your review
You can also access the reviews blog by clicking on the “Reviews” tab in the website header.
The “Suggest a Deal” Form is back on SmartCanucks’ sidebar 😀
Except now it’s even better! You can now upload files too! So if you come across a good deal, coupon or freebie please let me know and I’ll blog about it! If it’s a PDF or an image you can upload that too! Once I get your deal suggestion I will blog about it on SmartCanucks 🙂
Thanks in advance for sharing the deals you come across with the rest of us 🙂
The June issue of ELLE Magazine is a million times prettier because the gorgeous Ashley is pictured in it!
Ashley who a lot of you know her by roseofblack (the moderator) on SmartCanucks’ Forum won the makeover contest from Herbal Essences, traveled to Toronto a couple of months ago for the photo-shoot and is featured in June’s ELLE Canada magazine. Congrats Ashley 😀
Here are some of her ELLE Canada / Herbal Essences photos:

As promised, today I launch SmartCanucks’ largest contest ever in celebration of the new design and as a thank you to all the wonderful readers who made SC the beautiful place it is today. I’ve met a lot of amazing people through SC and made some everlasting friendships and I look forward to meeting new people and making new friends. Thank you.
I’ll be giving away a $10 Gift Card or PayPal cash daily for the next few months. Everyday we’ll have a different winner (you cannot win more than once). This means that we’ll have over 100 different winners so you have an excellent chance of winning.
Here’s how the contest will work: Every week we’ll have a new discussion topic. You can enter the contest by leaving comments and participating in the discussion. You’re allowed a maximum of 3 entries per week but you are more than welcome to post more than 3 comments if you’re enjoying the discussion (they will count as 3). Any spammy comments that don’t add true value to the discussion will not be included as contest entries.
Everyday (at no particular time because my schedule is pretty hectic) a winner will be randomly chosen. The winner will be chosen from all entries since the beginning of that week’s contest. So you may have left a comment on Day 1 and you could still win on Day 5. The winner can choose a gift card for a national store like Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, Tim Hortons, MasterCard cash card, etc. or cash via PayPal.
A few more quick points…
I’m looking for sponsors
If you own or work at a company or in Marketing/PR and are interested in sponsoring a day or week of my contest I’d really appreciate that! Please email me at smartcanucks at gmail dot com.
I’m looking for a reputable Youtuber or Blogger to randomly choose the daily winner
Right now I’ll be randomly choosing the daily winner myself. But if a well known Youtuber or Blogger is interested in taking over that task to prove it’s done fairly that would be great! Please email me at smartcanucks at gmail dot com.
How am I affording to pay for this?
I’ll be paying for this using the money I made from GoogleAds mainly. Hopefully I can get a few sponsors too.
Is this the same as the contest running on Smart Canucks Forum?
No, it is different.
Now onto the contest… 😀
Let us know of your childhood or young adult memories and the things you cherished the most. What makes you nostalgic? What do you miss? Tell us about a special moment you recall.
Contest info: New $10 gift card or paypal winner chosen daily.

Spring is in the air, and I’m alive. It must mean I have a mother somewhere and it’s time to say thank you!
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mommies out there in the SmartCanucks community. I hope your day is full of breakfasts in bed, cards made from macaroni, and lots of hugs and love.
While I can’t be nearly as nice to my wife today as I’d like to be (due to my erratic work schedule) I’d just like to give her an extra special thank you. We have two great kids, and you’ve been an amazing mom for nearly five years now. I might not be able to make breakfast in bed happen today, but hopefully this public thank you for all you’ve done can help make up for it.
Pictured above are my wife and our second daughter, Emily, taken shortly after her birth. I love my kids. I love my wife. And I’m very thankful for both. Happy Mother’s Day, Hailea.
If my Facebook is to be believed (and I think it is!) today is the birthday of our fearless leader and good friend Boo Radley.
Happy Birthday Boo! It’s been a great few years working with you sir, and I hope all of your birthday wishes come true!
I won’t give away the gentleman’s age, lest I ruin the mystique. Instead I’ll share the above photo with you, one of the rare brief sightings of a Boo Radley in the wild. No one really knows what he looks like. Catching a glimpse is about as rare as the Sasquatch..
Boo – are you the Sasquatch? 😉
