Based on your nominations, it was hard identifying the 3 best companies in Canada last year (2010). Therefore I’ve decided to open the stage for more than just three companies and let your votes decide who the best of the best is!

I’ll try writing something nice about each company in one sentence.

Many readers shared very sad and horrific stories regarding dealing with Bell Canada. I hope the management at Bell take the time to read the comments and feedback and try improving the quality of their business. Alexander Graham Bell, from which Bell Canada acquired its name was a great inventor and innovator. Bell Canada, you don’t need to look far for inspiration.

On January 5, 2011 Brandsaver.Ca will be launching new coupons worth over $130. This is perfect timing since the last ones from the November 2010 release expire in early January. Based on your nominations, the 3 worst companies in Canada last year (2010) were: Bell Canada, Rogers and Zellers.

Bell Canada has led an evil campaign to try changing the Internet to usage-based billing (capped Internet). They have been pushing the government and other ISPs to enforce these ridiculous policies. Furthermore, Melanie C. summarized everything that’s wrong with Bell:

Their customer service is appalling. Recent news headlines show that they have been fined (something like 1.2 million) for violating the national ‘do not call list’. They offer inflated prices for standard services, it’s impossible to get ahold of a real person when calling for help and, when you do, there seems to always be a very significant language barrier.

I’d like to add that Bell’s customer service mostly runs from India when a lot of people in Canada are unemployed. Thank you Bell for supporting Canadians.

Rogers is a company that seems to have grown too much too quickly. They almost reached a monopoly a couple of years ago. This was accompanied with sub-par customer service, very frequent billing errors and jacked prices. But due to their terrible customer service, continuous billing errors and better competitors, Rogers is slowly losing its grip on the Canadian wireless/mobile market.

Another major annoyance with Rogers is their lack of proper pricing on plans. As honeydoo states in the comments:

Rogers.. just tacky how much you have to hassle them and play ‘the game’ to get a good plan.

Oh and if you were a pay-as-you-go customer let me mention the single word that will send chills down your spine: Melanie… Voice recognition.

Zellers made it into the worst three companies of 2010 unfortunately. Remember the days when Zellers used to be the place to go shopping and Walmart was frail in comparison? Well long gone are those days. Zellers has simply frozen in time. It has not evolved or improved over the past few years and has been slowly going downhill. Plagued with dirty stores, unfriendly staff and messy shelves Zellers is now left to die a slow and bitter death.

Two companies that barely escaped from the Worst 3 are Shoppers Drug Mart and Sears Canada. It seems like people have a love/hate relationship with Shoppers because many people nominated it for both best and worst companies of the year. I was not however impressed when I read that Shoppers Drug Mart pulled 3,500 copies of Adbusters to satisfy the Canadian Jewish Congresss. As for Sears, well there’s been a lot of talk about the parent company in the US going bankrupt soon and I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the case.

AnneD spotted this awesome deal.  The Wii Console and Wii Sports is only $99.99 at Hmv Canada.  This is an in-store deal only but you can “reserve” one online.  At first I thought it was a pricing error, but apparently its just the older model which doesn’t matter at all.

Cineplex Canada is now accepting more members to their exclusive mystery shoppers program.  For $50 (retail of over $120) you will receive 2 movie passes and concession vouchers at least 4 times a year.  This is a decent offer for those of us who frequent the movies quite often.

Below is an explanation and FAQ of the offer:
What is the Mystery Shopper Club?
The Mystery Shopper Club is an en exclusive group of Cineplex Entertainment customers who evaluate our
theatres. For an annual membership fee of $50 +applicable taxes we provide this exclusive group with two movie passes for admission and gift cards for concession purchases at least four times a year (over $120 value)

How am I supposed to evaluate the theatres?
That’s the easy part! For each ‘shop’ we mail you a set of passes, gift cards, and a two page evaluation form. Just go to the theatre, enjoy the movie, and then afterwards, fill out the evaluation form. (Your comments are VERY important) Place the completed form in the postage paid envelope and return it by mail.
Please remember that we cannot get a true evaluation of the theatre if the staff knows you are there to evaluate them. You must be discreet!

How do I join this club?
There is an annual enrollment fee of $50 + applicable taxes. Simply fill in the online request form and a representative of our Guest Services department will be contacting you in the near future to advise of theatre availability and the membership enrollment process.

What a deal! After one shop, you have already been reimbursed for the majority of your membership fee. For each shop, (remember – at least four shops per year are guaranteed) you receive two passes and $10 in gift certificates. So bring a friend!

Can I participate more than 4 times per year?
Depending on the number of shoppers we have in your area, you may be able to participate more frequently. Our goal is to have each of our theatres shopped approximately once a week, so if there is a shortage of shoppers in your area, you may be asked to repeat a visit.

Can I see any movie I’d like?
Yes. You can shop the theatre any day of the week for any regularly scheduled show.

Can I shop the theatre of my choice?
In most cases, yes! You will be asked to select up to three theatres that you would like to ‘shop’. The theatre assigned to you will be based on availability.

Am I under any kind of obligation?
The only obligation you have is to complete and mail back the evaluation form in a timely manner. If we do not receive a completed evaluation form within three weeks of the assigned ‘shop by’ date on the confirmation sheet, you will lose any remaining show visits, without a refund of your $50.

It seems that Shoppers had a significant problem with their computer systems yesterday.  From overcharging items part of the two day sale to not crediting the 20x points.  One of our savy Smart Canuck’ers posted their receipt pointing out all the problems.  Looks like there might be a lot of scanning codes of practice claims happening at Shoppers in the next few days.  Click here to join the discussion on the Smart Canucks forum.
