Hello! I’m a new blogging contributor to the site so I thought I’d introduce myself. My name is Kerri and I’ve been a member of the site for some time now. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to post here on a fairly regular basis.

Who am I? Well, I’m sort of a serial contester. Apparently it was destined to happen. My mom told me that she won a bunch of stuff from Sears for guessing my correct birth date. I don’t remember the first contest I entered or won but recall that my indulgence began around the age of 12 when I started winning radio call-in contests fairly consistently. I became addicted to that lightning-like charge that surged through me when I hung up the phone after winning. Funny how it still happens when I win stuff today! 🙂

I’ve got spring fever now with all the newness! I LOVE it!

I first came across this deal a couple of days ago on Pizza Pizza’s automated specials and deals voice system. It was around 7pm when I was placing my order and I was too hungry to wait for 2 more hours and get this hot deal 😛

Pizza Pizza’s new special is as follows: Order any large 3 toppings pizza between 9pm and 9am and get it for $9.99.  That’s over $5 in savings and definitely a hot deal. The closest good deal I can think of is their 2 large pizzas for $21.99 (I think) last Christmas. Just remember it’s after 9pm at night and before 9am in the morning. Not exactly the best times to be eating pizza but hey, that’s an awesome deal for these wild Friday night parties 😉

McDonald’s will go a long way to protect their trademark. So much so, in fact, that it seems they’re willing to sue any restaurant that starts with the prefix Mc. McCurry was one such restaurant.

The Malaysian-based, family owned establishment has little in common with McDonald’s outside of the “Mc” prefix and colour-scheme, but that was enough to set McDonald’s into an 8-year court battle over the name.

During that time, the restaurant dropped the C from their sign, going by the name M Curry until the dispute was resolved. M Curry’s menu couldn’t have been more different from McDonald’s. Serving traditional Indian foods like curry and dosai, there’s not a burger or fry anywhere in sight. The restaurants problems started back in 1999 when they decided to shorten their name from the rather verbose Malaysian Chicken Curry Restaurant. Since then it’s been an uphill battle of legal fees and undue stress.

Last week, M Curry’s owner climbed a ladder and put the C back on the sign. The battle was over. McCurry won out.

McDonald’s could still (and likely will) attempt to appeal the decision, and McCurry’s legal woes could be far from over. It’s just amazing to see the lengths some companies will go to to claim dominion over something as simple as a couple of letters.

I was shopping at the mall yesterday when I noticed American Eagle Outfitters had an additional 20% on  all clearance items. All Polos are already marked down to 50% off from $40 to $20. On top of that I got an addition 20% which discounted it further to around $16! An exceptional price for great polo shirts. I ended up spending over $100 at American Eagle 😛

I checked out American Eagle Canada’s website today and this looks like a national deal at all AE stores in Canada. I’m not sure how long it’ll last for, so if you’re interested visit your local American Eagle AE Canada store asap 😉

This is great news! You can now buy the Sony PlayStation 3 Console online at Staples.ca. Do you know what this means? Savings! Staples emails and mails out loads of discount coupons like $50 off $200, $20 off $150 and so on and sometimes these coupons can be stackable!

Furthermore, if the price of the PlayStation 3 is lower at say Walmart or Best Buy Canada or is on a weekly promo somewhere, you can price match with Staples online, get a 10% rebate on the price difference and then apply the coupons on top of all that to get yourself a great deal.

I used to be an expert in Staples coupons a few years ago but since blogging on SmartCanucks I haven’t been actively following what coupons Staples has nowadays. I’m also not sure which coupons can and can’t be stacked so if you have any information please let us know.

HBC Home Outfitters Canada has a promo on Dyson vacuums: purchase any full size Dyson Canister vacuum and receive 1 million HBC Rewards points. These points are worth a $125 Home Outfitters Gift Card. The Dyson models included in this promo are Dyson DC20, DC21, DC23 & DC23 Animal with prices ranging from $499.99 to $749.99.

I personally have no experience with Dyson vacuums but starting at $499.99 they seem very pricey! Even after 1 million HBC rewards points! So I guess this deal would be good if you were planning on buying a Dyson vacuum anyway. Dysons are known to be particularly good if you have pets and family members with allergies.  Looking at the Dyson prices at Home Outfitters I can see they’re a bit inflated so it’s probably a good idea to compare prices to other  stores and make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Everything Dyson produces seems to be pretty pricey in general. Their Dyson Airblades which  are supposed to eventually replace the classical energy guzzling  hand-dryers in public washrooms cost around $1500 each. Dyson Airblades use some pretty neat technology stolen from similar to the Japanese Mitsubishi Jet Towel.

Lots of new changes around here lately thanks to the beautiful new overhaul Boo has given the site. I’d like to talk to you about one of those changes right now, since I know questions about it are bound to pop up about it sooner or later: avatars.

As you may have seen, a few folks (myself included) now have their picture beside their name when commenting on a post. This is done not through SmartCanucks, but through a website called Gravatar. Gravatar is something of a universal avatar system. While it won’t work for every website you visit, you’ll find that many of the blogs you comment on have gravatars active.

Once you’ve set up your gravatar account any site that has a connection to gravatars should automatically begin to show your photo next to the comments. Neat, huh?
