Tomato lovers rejoice!  Last week Boo brought tragic news to tomato addicts everywhere.  A number of fast food chains including the big M had pulled tomatoes from their menu indefinitely while the FDA attempted to locate the source of a tomato-related salmonella outbreak.  Although the FDA hasn’t been lucky enough to track down exactly where the issue started (they think it’s either Florida or Mexico) McDonald’s has announced that you can expect to start seeing a little red slice back on your Big Mac in the next 7-10 days.

I got a call from 1-800-575-9090 today. While the phone was ringing I quickly Googled the number and found it was Rogers Pay As you Go so I answered. It was an automated message thanking me for being a loyal customer and giving me a free 14 digit pin for $5 worth of Rogers Pay As You Go airtime 😀

Will this $5 change my opinion of Rogers terrible customer service? No! It’s one of the worst ever and their automated system is a nightmare.

Since most Canadian stores have withdrawn Bisphenol A bottles from their shelves, a lot of them are accepting refunds of the used hazardous bottles. They will either refund you back your money or give you a store gift card. In any case, it’s better than just throwing them out.

For example:

The Forzani Group Ltd., Canada’s largest sporting goods retailer, and Hudson’s Bay Co., which includes the Bay and Zellers stores, said Tuesday they are removing BPA products and will refund customers who bought the bottles at their stores.

The same will apply to most stores.

To know if your bottle contains Bisphneol A, check the recycling codes (triangles) at the bottom. A code number 7 may (but not necessarily) indicate that it contains Bisphneol A.

Someone sent me this regarding Zellers GTA still accepting refunds 🙂

This has been around for a few years now, but I’m always amazed at the number of people who have yet to hear about OpenOffice. OpenOffice is a complete office software solution that offers a suite of programs nearly identical to those in Microsoft Office. It can also work with Microsoft Office file formats, so you don’t have to worry about not being able to edit that Excel spreadsheet or Word document that your friend has been working on.

For those of you who think this is too good to be true let me assure you –it’s not. OpenOffice is one of the leading products in the open-source community. For those of you not familiar, ‘open source” technically means that the code behind the program is freely available for anyone to fiddle with, but the spirit behind it is “everything should be free.” You can learn more about it here.

OpenOffice isn’t just free for private use, either. If you’re an office manager whose paying through the nose for multiple Microsoft Office licenses, I’ve just earned you your bonus this year. If you’re in that scenario you might also want to look into switching your office to Linux instead of Windows — it’s just as free, so it’ll help to save you a small mountain of cash.

Want to try something different, but don’t feel like downloading and installing OpenOffice? Check out GoogleDocs — it’s a free, web-based alternative to an office suite. Although it’s not nearly as feature-rich, it’s usually my spreadsheet and document editor of choice. I like how it ties into all of my other Google accounts and how easy it is to share editing with others.

OpenOffice is available for Windows, Mac and Linux free of charge via openoffice.org.
