When people around the world think about Canadians, one word usually comes to mind: polite. For the most part our SmartCanuckers display that in spades. With that in mind, I thought it might be fun to take a peek at LifeHacker’s guide to commenting on blogs.
The original post is a little old, but courtesy and common sense never go out of style. Topic highlights include “Remember that nobody likes a know-it-all,” “Be succinct” and “Be courteous.” It’s a very well written piece and even seasoned bloggers like me can learn a thing or two.
Remember kiddies — a smart Canuck is a polite Canuck.

This one tickles my frugal bone in a really special place. I spent most of my sixteenth year on this earth fighting off the Soviet invasion on my desktop PC, and now I can do so again courtesy of EA Games.
Effective last night at midnight, you can visit the promotional website for the upcoming Red Alert 3 and download the original game free of charge. What’s more, if you pre-order Red Alert 3 you can also download Red Alert 2 free of charge. It’s a Red Alert bonanza! Everything must go!

It’s been a rough summer for McDonald’s and food recalls. First up we had the continent-wide tomato scare that left our sandwiches without that delicious red crunch, and now the Turkey BLT is off the menu until further notice.
In case you’ve been out of the loop, let me get you up to speed. Certain products from Maple Leaf Meats have been exposed to the bactera lysteria monocytogenes, and these tainted meats have been responsible for 4 deaths so far. These meats all came out of a Toronto factory — the same factory that produces the turkey used by McDonald’s.
All things considered, this might not be as quick a fix as the tomato incident. A clean up of the factory to get it to safe standards again will likely take time, and finding a new supplier for turkey that can supply the volume McDonald’s would require might be a real challenge.
Does anyone even eat the Turkey BLT? Given the circumstances, would anyone really care if it was taken off the menu for good?

Have you dipwa’ed? I recently was pointed out to this site that seems to be the equivalent of woot (USA only)
So I thought i’d check it out Dipwa because its the same idea, one deal, one day as woot. It doesn’t look to shabby, although the pictures of the actual items leave something to be desired. I’m an organized picture person, as in even on my ebay auctions I like to see the item for sale and only the item, not clutter or background items.
Anyways In the FAQ I grabbed this for those of you who aren’t clear on the ”woot” concept.
Â
”Dipwa is a “One Deal, One Day” shopping site that serves only Canadians. Each day we will feature one item at a steeply discounted price so that our customers can enjoy great savings. Our aim is to bring the popular American shopping experience of “Woot.com” to Canadians. At Dipwa, we understand how offthetruck.com and razzle.ca have let Canadian shoppers down. It is our mission to not repeat their mistakes in our endeavour to serve you better.”

Some of our younger readers will have no idea what I’m talking about, but for those of us that remember it, the McDLT was brilliant. Just like the ad says — it kept the hot side hot and the cool side cool. Unfortunately it also created a ton of needless styrofoam trash and eventually became the straw that broke the camels back, causing the company to cave to outside pressure and stop using styrofoam containers.
The commercial that introduced the McDLT is a perfect snapshot of mid-80’s culture. It’s big, it’s fun, it’s dancy — this is what TV felt like when I was kid. It’s a strange world when even advertising has lost it’s innocence.
And that young man with a Miami Vice sports coat and a head full of hair? That’s Jason Alexander, though you probably know him better as Seinfeld’s own George Costanza.
