Target Canada Liquidation Sales To Start This Thursday

target-liquidation-update-news

For those of you waiting for Target’s liquidation sales, you do not have long to wait!  While Target have chosen a liquidator (awaiting court approval), leaked memos show that they expect huge sales to start this Thursday – even if the liquidator has not been approved at that time.

The memos state “we expect Thursday sales to double compared to a normal Thursday” and Thursday will be like Black Friday“.  Some of this is likely due to the news breaking that the liquidation has started, we have all seen the pictures from people who have recently visited Target for the first time looking for sales after the news broke even though the liquidator had not yet been appointed.  However, some will also be due to the actual sales.  The memo also says that they will start marketing the sales soon, even though they have previously said that no more flyers will be printed.

A forum member who works at Target also mentioned that many stores are getting trucks of new items, including the plus size clothing that was promised last year and spring lines – and it will go on sale too!

If you visit Target on Thursday or later, be sure to let us know what bargains you pick up!

Tim Hortons RRRoll Up the Rim to Win Freebies & Contests 2015: Millions of Prizes & Play Online

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 8.22.22 AM

It’s that time of year again, where Tim Hortons Canada will be busting out those infamous red cups that hold the potential to either gift you with that magical and oh so sought after three-letter word (“Win”) or to simply dash your hopes and dreams aside by cursing you with that ill-fated, three-word phrase “Please, try again”. You all know what I’m talking about, the tumultuous season of RRRoll Up the Rim to Win is upon us, and while in previous years you may not have been a winner (be it of a free coffee or plasma screen TV), this year may just be your chance to redeem yourself as there are over 48 million prizes to be won.

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 8.28.04 AM

And running alongside the traditional in-store RRRoll Up the Rim contest with Tim Hortons, will be the online edition called RRRoll Up Replay;  a contest where you can essentially double your odds of wining by playing on either your desktop, tablet, or mobile device. The rules of this online edition enable you to play up to 5 Game Cups at a time, with each Game Cup containing 2 rolls. The more you play online, the more badges and points you can collect, which will further increase your chances of winning prizes!

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 8.25.52 AM

Unlike last year’s edition of Tim Hortons RRRoll Up Replay contest, you will be able to play this online game all day as each hour you will earn a new cup to be played. If you are able to collect 200,000 points before the contest ends on April 2nd, 2015 (this is the closing date for both the in-restaurant and online contest), you will be eligible to play on the Extra Day of Play on April 7th, 2015 where you will have the chance to play from a prize pool which will include a 2015 Toyota Camry.

Screen Shot 2015-02-02 at 8.34.47 AM

For the standard in-restaurant competition, the eligible cups for the chance to roll up 1 RRRoll Up the Rim will be a small, and for the chance to roll up 2 rims you can purchase a medium, large or extra-large. The prizes, as mentioned earlier, are much better this year than in previous years – namely because there are essentially more prizes than there are Canadians! For the in-store competition, the big ticket prize is obviously the 2015 Toyota Camry, but I know from personal experience that there is nothing more rewarding than rolling up to discover that you will be getting a FREE donut with your morning coffee (then again, I have never won a 2015 Toyota Camry…).

The full list of prizes to be won in this year’s competition from Tim Hortons includes:

  • 47 2015 Toyota Camry XSE 4 cylinder
  • 94 LG OLED 55″ TV
  • 23,620 prizes of $100 Canadian Tim Cards
  • 48,203,747 Coffee & Food Prizes
    • Coffee or Latte: $1.35 – $3.89 Canadian Value  (choice of any size hot beverage)
    • Donut at $0.95 – $2.05 Canadian Value (choice of any single muffin, cookie or donut)
  • 94 $5,000 Visa Prepaid cards

The overall odds of winning at least a free coffee or donut in this year’s RRRoll Up the Rim are 1 in 6, while the odds of winning the car are about 1 in 6,277,259; so at the very least you will probably come away with a free coffee in the next two months (unless you are that lucky 1 in 6,277,259 odd!)

As is the standard for the RRRoll Up the Rim contest, there will be a skill testing question asked to claim your prize in addition to proof of your original ‘winning’ rim; that being said, for the coffee and food prizes at Tim Hortons, I have only ever been asked for the winning rim and no addition and/or subtraction question has been required to be answered (so this may just apply for the big ticket prizes).

Tim Hortons will be running the contest until April 2nd, 2015, and you must claim your prizes before May 8th at 11:59 PM ET (or closing of the store).

Click here to read the full rules and regulations of the in-restaurant contest for RRRoll Up the Rim, or here to learn more about the online contest or RRRoll Up to Replay.

SmartCanucks.ca Target Clearance Finds Thread Mentioned on CTV

target-clearance-deals

Like many SmartCanucks forum members, the Target Clearance Finds thread has been one of my go-to threads.  I check it all of the time.  A trip to Target without it is just unheard of, I mean all those unstickered items that are secretly on sale are just waiting to be bought. I will miss those little red stickers, I have picked up so many 70% off deals at prices I doubt I will ever see again.

As sad as some of us are about the closing of Target, the threads has become even more popular as people seek out information and bargains and this hasn’t gone unnoticed as CTV linked to the thread today!

For those hoping for liquidation sales starting this week, they are still awaiting a court appointed liquidator so it is just unadvertised clearance for now.  They saying early February then a liquidation process of 16-20 weeks, although SCers who work at stores have mentioned that some stores expect to close much sooner.

If you are thinking of heading out to find some bargains at Target, make sure you check the latest clearance finds before you do.

VIA Rail Canada Valentine’s Day Sale: Save 55% Off on Select One-Way Fares in February!

Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.50.45 AMVIA Rail Canada is having a last minute sale for those of you who are still trying to plan some romantic getaway for your significant others, and still be able to save a little (remember the big day is now two weeks away tomorrow!) This deal that they are offering will give you, on select one-way fares, up to a 55% discount from the regular economy fare; or if you’re travelling business class within the Windsor – Quebec City corridor and equal savings.

Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.49.21 AM

There are of course restrictions as to when you must travel and where you are travelling to, as is normally the case with trains, planes and automobiles deals. For the 55% off discount on economy fare tickets, you must book your travel at least 3 days before you intend to leave and it has to be between February 2nd-28th. The economy fare tickets can be across Canada and must be booked between January 30th and February 9th.

Screen Shot 2015-01-30 at 10.48.44 AMEssentially the same rules apply for the VIA Rail business class tickets, except that it is only valid within the Windsor-Quebce city corridor and dates of travel must be on a Friday, Saturday, or a Sunday.

I was able to find a one-way fare from Ottawa to Montreal on Valentine’s Day weekend for just $37.63 – and if I wasn’t too picky about the return ticket (e.g. coming home on a Tuesday versus a Monday) I could swing the same price!

Target Canada Updates: No Longer Price-Matching

TargetPM

Target have not yet announced store closings and official liquidation has not started, but they have made some changes in stores.  Stores are no longer price-matching and many stores are already saying items are final sale.  Some forum users mentioned that staff have said gift cards will not be accepted after February 1st despite their original promise to accept gift cards through liquidation.

targetstarbucks

They have also closed Starbucks in all Target stores.  If you love Starbucks mugs and other items, they have been moved into the store so watch for them once liquidation starts!

Target Closing: Answers To Your Questions

target

There were a lot of questions on the forums and in reply to our post on the news of Target closing its Canadians stores so we got some answers for you:

Store closings: First, do not expect sales right away.  They expect the liquidation process to take 16-20 weeks in total with actual sales starting in 2-3 weeks (once they get a court approval for a liquidation firm).  While they are in the process of cancelling orders made for Canadian stock, they have warehouses with items and agreements for orders in place so stores will be getting that stock in the coming weeks.  Some stores will be closing sooner than others, once we get a list of store closings, we will share it!

Gift cards:  Target Canada will continue to accept gift cards through the liquidation period.

Returns: Target stores will continue to accept returns of merchandise purchased at Target Canada stores, according to pre-existing policies. Once Target Canada begins the liquidation process, all previously purchased items as well as those purchased during the liquidation process will be final sale and will be marked as such.

Protection plans or warranties:  Guests should call the company that issued the warranty for additional questions.

Red Cards: Will be honoured until the close of stores and you must pay all balances by the date listed on the final purchase.

Pharmacies and your information: Target Canada pharmacies are operated by franchised pharmacists. Target Canada is not responsible for the custody and control of patient files. Guests should contact their pharmacy franchisee for additional information. Note that pharmacy staff are often not Target staff and will not be getting the severance package mentioned before, a few forum members have said that this is the same for other staff in Target, such as wireless experts and Starbucks staff.  Since the pharmacies are independently operated, they may close earlier than stores, so it is worth checking now to move your information to another pharmacy.

If you have any specific questions, you can contact Target’s customer relations team at 1.800.440.0680 or [email protected] – note that they have not been answering any questions on social media, so contacting directly is the only way to get answers.

Mexx Canada To Close All Stores By End of February

mexx closing

Mexx has also announced that it is closing all Canadian stores after filing for bankruptcy protection last month.

Unlike Target’s four to five month liquidation plan, Mexx will close all of its stores by the end of February, so expect closing sales soon.  Mexx has said that 25 stores will close this week, so if you love their clothes, check out your local store for deals soon to get an idea of the closing date.

Their head office and distribution centre will close around the same time, another loss of 1700+ retail jobs for Canadians across the stores and offices.

Target To Close All Canadian Stores

Target-Closes-Canadian-Stores

Target has just confirmed the rumours that they are leaving Canada.  This morning, Target announced that it will be closing its Canadian stores and filing for creditor protection in Canada effective immediately.

From the press information, I expect to see the store closings similar to when Zellers closed, with some closing earlier and liquidating their stock to other stores in the area until they all close.

For those worried about employees, they are asking that their creditor protection agreement includes a minimum of 16 weeks of compensation, including wages and benefits coverage for employees who are not required for the full wind-down period to give their team members time to find new jobs. Target Canada stores will remain open during the liquidation process.

The CEO had this to say about leaving Canada: “While we made some recent progress, the changes were not enough to inspire the guest to shop Target. The losses were just too great. Given that the holiday season is our busiest time of the year, we evaluated our fourth quarter performance carefully and unfortunately didn’t see the step change in our performance we needed to see.”

Are you sorry to see Target go?  While I agree, they had a long way to go, I will miss the clean stores and some of the product lines that cannot be found elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see who takes over the stores, most were built or renovated so are in great condition, but for the ones in my area, there is a Walmart nearby each of them, so I can’t see them wanting them as some news stories claim.
