Freshpoint Vancouver, Ltd. is recalling Del Monte and Sysco Imperial Fresh brand cantaloupes from the marketplace due to possible Salmonella contamination. The distribution of these items is Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and possibly national. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is recalling these three products:

1. Del Monte Cantaloupe 1 count
2. Del Monte Cantaloupe (case) 12 count, lot 360012
3. Sysco Imperial Fresh Cantaloupe 3 count, lot 127 12 035 5

What you should do: Check to see if you have recalled products in your home. Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased. Consumers who are unsure if they have the affected cantaloupes are advised to check with their retailer.

Despite the recall, there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these cantaloupes.

Pfizer has recalled 124 lots of Advil liquid products for infants and children! Health Canada is informing Canadians that Pfizer Consumer Healthcare has initiated a voluntary recall of 124 lots of Advil liquid products for infants and children because of a potential risk of inconsistences in dosing of the product. “Clumps” of Ibuprofen may form in the bottle and lead to higher or lower doses that are given to infants and children if it is not shaken well before each use.

Lower doses may not be adequate in reducing the fever, leading to other health issues which could include, in rare instances, convulsions, the alert said. Although unlikely, higher doses may lead to vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, ringing in the ears’ and decreased breathing rates.

If you shop at Walmart, get ready to start paying for those plastic bags.  Starting on February 9th, Walmart will join the list of retailers charging $0.05 for each plastic bag used as part of its strategy for cutting the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills.

They will have reuseable bags available for a limited time at just 25 cents each to help you make the move to reuseable & recyclable bags.  Since most Walmart cashiers bag as they go and are used to providing unlimited bags, it may be a bit of a learning curve.  I noticed when shopping last week without my reuseables that my cashier used 5 plastic bags when three would have fit, but she gave them to me as she got to larger/fragile products.

Walmart says that the money from plastic bags will go towards supporting recycling initiatives for grocery bags and other thin plastic objects.  They will also work on improving in-store recycling and collection programs and work with suppliers to find ways of removing plastic from its packaging.

Do grocery stores near you still offer free plastic bags?

If you have any Dole or PC Organics salad products, check before you eat them as there is a recall covering 48 Dole and 9 PC products due to listeria contamination.

This recall covers various pre-packaged chopped salads, salad blends and kits, and leafy green products from both Dole and PC Organics, you can see a full list of recalled products here.  This recall impacts all current best before dates when the code below the date starts with A.  You can find this code on the upper left corner of most Dole products.

Impacted products include salad and greens mixes including spinach, kale and arugula, 50/50 blends, salad kits, ready to eat kits, Chop Chop kits,  and leafy greens from PC Organics.

While there are no serious cases linked to the recall in Canada, there have been incidents in the US so this is a recall to take seriously.  You can see full details on the recall here.

Some news for thrift shoppers, especially those in the Toronto area, 16 Goodwill stores, plus 10 donation centres and 2 offices have closed due to a cash flow crisis.  This impacts stores in the GTA, Barrie, Orillia and Brockville.

Workers showed up to work on Sunday to find that the stores had not been opened with no notice and donations are piling up outside donation centres.

Goodwill receives an annual subsidy from the federal and provincial governments totalling $4 million and since most items sold are donated, overhead should be employee costs and store costs.  Goodwill says that they are exploring a variety of options to continue its decades-long mission but in the mean time, you may want to head to Value Village or other thrift stores.
