Every year the good folks over at Google get together to tell us all about the things we’ve been searching for over the past twelve months. And so without further adieu, I give you the 10 most popular searches on google.com in 2006.

It looks like technology ruled the roost again this year, with only the number three most popular search “world cup” avoiding the whole geek chic culture. But what’s that you say? You haven’t heard of half of the things on this list? That’s ok, neither have I — and I consider myself a pretty tech-saavy person. Yet I actually had to search bebo before writing this article just to make sure I wasn’t completely out of touch with the real world (for those of you scratching your noodles like I was, it turns out it’s a myspace-like community.)
If you want to see a ton of great top ten lists just like this to get a better sense of what held interest for people in the year that was, hop on over to Google Zeitgeist 2006. Everything from the top ten searches asking “who is” to the top ten searches for tickets are. All very neat stuff!

Homer J. Simpson – Man, myth, and now …mouse! Everyone has at least one Simpsons fanatic in their circle of friends, and I can’t think of any better way to bring them some yuletide cheer than with a half-naked Homer floating around in a pool of blue water. In addition to its Simpsons-related coolness, the Floating Homer mouse isn’t lacking in any of your standard expectations – it’s a 2-button mouse with a scroll wheel, and it’s optical rather than antiquated. Not too shabby for a $17 USD price tag.

I don’t know about you, but I hate iTunes. And I mean HATE. I find it so unfriendly, so slow – in my books, it’s an absolute nightmare. But that hasn’t stopped me from wanting an iPod. As much as I hate to admit it there’s still nothing better out there than Apple’s little white pocket pal. Thanks to MGTEK there’s finally some hope for folks like me. So if you’re putting an iPod in someones stocking this year, why not tell them about Dopsip? It’s a Windows Media Player plug-in that will allow WMP11 to recognize the iPod just like it would any other portable music playing device.
Dopisp does have one limitation though, and depending on how you acquire your music it might be a real stick in the mud. Dopsip can’t sync any music with DRM protection, which means that if you’ve purchased music from the iTunes Store you won’t be able to sync it through Dopisp.
If you’re interested in Dopsip, I’d suggest getting it right away. It’s not available for purchase yet, but it is available for free as a two month evaluation copy. Give it a shot and let us know what you think!
