Over the past month a lot of attention has been paid in the Canadian news media to Bill C-10 — and rightfully so.ĂÂ The Bill includes more than a hundred amendments to the Income Tax Act, but one little clause about the film industry seems to be stirring all this controversy; a clause that allows the Heritage Minister to determine if “public financial support of the production would not be contrary to public policy.”
In plain English, this means that one man has the right to refuse tax credits and other incentives provided by the government to film and television productions that he doesn’t feel are in keeping with public policy.ĂÂ The problem?ĂÂ Nowhere does this amendment state what “contrary to public policy” actually means or what specific credits and incentives would be removed.ĂÂ Considering the number of jobs and dollars that float their way to “Hollywood North” every year, this could prove detrimental not only in determining what we watch but to a large segment of our economy.
A few great bits of reading on the subject;
If you’re at all bothered by this, there are a number of petitions floating around out there in cyberspace you can sign (and even a Facebook group with a large support base), but nothing is ever more effective than contacting your local MP and telling them how you feel.
I went into this article attempting to offer a fair and balanced reporting of this situation, but the more I searched the less I found as far as support for this bill goes.Ă The only backing I found was in a parlimentary press release: “Bill C-10 has nothing to do with censorship and everything to do with the integrity of the tax system. The goal is to ensure public trust in how tax dollars are spent.”Ă If there was any truth to that, wouldn’t they just modify the offending clause that obviously has everything to do with censorship?
Where do you stand on the issue?
Tim Hortons Inc. has confirmed that has increased prices in Ontario as of April 7 as a result of higher overall operating costs at its stores.
The price increase mostly applies to beverages and coffee in particular, a company spokesperson said, but customers have been notified with signs for more than a week.
A medium coffee will now cost $1.22 (excluding taxes), up from $1.17 previously. The price of a large coffee moves from $1.31 to $1.38, and an extra large from $1.49 to $1.57.
The last price hike for Tim Hortons coffee was in February 2006.
On Friday, BMO Capital Markets said the increases would boost the coffee and donut chainââŹâ˘s same-store sales growth.

DELL’s starting to have these days of deals way too often which is a bad sign. The last set of days of deals weren’t that great (although the Entertainment Days of deals were awesome). This time it’s 9 Days of Business Deals which means you should expect more computers and less accessories. Hopefully that would mean a couple of good desktop and laptop deals.

I joined the A&E Insider last year and get frequent messages from them. They ask your opinion on upcoming shows and tv movies. They let members have a say in which promo poster to use for “The Two Coreys”, and they give you clips of documentaries they’re working on, etc; its really cool. You also get videos for members only (cool epecially if you’re a Dog fan lolz)
For participating in their program, they sent me a code to use in their online store worth $30. I bought a Dog the Bounty Hunter box set for $19.95 (they have a lot of sale and clearance items) and shipping was only $10.95 so it only cost me 90 cents for 4 dvd set. Plus you get to play games first, totally worth it. Just register for the Insider and get started!

Thanks Rodrigo O. for pointing this out!
