Beer Store Canada: Leukemia Bottle Drive, May 26th & 27th

***REPOST: Since the long weekend is here!***

During the last weekend of May, conveniently the weekend after May 2-4, The Beer Store is hosting an event where you can donate your empties (or cash) to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada! 100% of the proceeds will go to this charity. 🙂 Last year, they raised over $1.2 million dollars!

So I’m posting this to give you ample notice to put their bottles and cans aside for May 26th & 27th. If this is an organisation that is close to your heart, you may consider volunteering as well. Click here for more details on this charity bottle drive!

While out, the night before garbage day, I was this-close to picking up 2 cases of empties that some person put on their curb!!! What stopped me was that there were lights on and I didn’t want to infect my trunk with beer flies.

Giant Tiger Canada: Guess Who Is Price Matching? Let’s Give a Giant Hurray for Giant Tiger!

happy-rolling-tiger

I noticed something pretty big in my last Giant Tiger e-newsletter. They’re now price matching. Below are all the details.

“Your confidence in our pricing is critical and the Giant Value Guarantee is our promise to you!
Our Giant Value Guarantee means “We will beat the advertised price of any competitor!” If you happen to find a local competitor offering a lower price on any identical item we carry in-store, simply show us their current flyer and we will sell you that item for 1 cent less than their price. Why do we do that? Because delivering the most outstanding value for your family budget is our mission, every day. ”

Not applicable to clearance sales, percentage discounts, rebates, combination promotions (e.g. Buy 2, Get 1 Free), private label products, online offers, preferred customer discounts or random discounts (Scratch and Save events), or to competitor misprints, withdrawn or corrected advertisements. Applicable only to products currently in stock at your local Giant Tiger. We reserve the right to limit quantities. We reserve the right to make changes to this program without prior notice”. Local competitors reflect each stores’ market trading area within Canada as determined by Giant Tiger.

As you can see no mention of not being able to combine coupons with price matches, fingers crossed it stays that way. Unfortunately for me our local Giant Tiger happens to be where I have the worst luck with coupons. I guess they’ve gotten screwed over a few times and now they got to crack down on everyone. They comb over every one with a magnifying glass… literally one cashier pulls out a magnifying glass.

They’ve got a lot of great deals this week anyways for their 51th anniversary sale, see the flyer here. They also are offering an instore coupon for $10 off a purchase $40 clothing, accesories, and footwear.

Bell Canada To Raise Payphone Prices

payphone

Heres a quarter heres, two quarters, heres a loonie, call someone who cares!

Bell Canada wants to raise a regular payphone call to $1. Yes you read that correctly. 4 quarters.  The reasoning behind this hike is because the Royal Canadian Mint is changing the style of the loonie.  Apparently payphones will not be able to accept the new tender and will need to be retrofitted.

I personally rarely use payphones.  Generally I have my cell phone on me, but there are still times I end up needing to use a payphone.  Last time I picked up a payphone I almost fell over at the 50 cent cost. Now they want $1? I definitely will never use a payphone unless there is an emergency.

Do you think they should raise the rate? Are payphones a thing of the past anyways?

Canada Waves Goodbye To The Penny

penny

Today in the new budget they announced that they will be fazing out our penny.  Apparently it was costing tax payers 11 million dollars a year to produce since it cost 1.5 pennies to make each one.

Do agree with this decision? Will you miss the penny?

London Drugs Canada: Coupon Policy Update *Stacking No Longer On Sc Johnson Products*

sc

London Drugs released a new coupon policy due to a few bad seeds misusing the program.  It really sucks when a few bad seeds ruin it for everyone who did things in moderation.  I personally have never shopped at a London Drugs because I live in Ontario.

Here is the new policy:

Dear Couponers,

Due to unfortunate circumstances we are forced to announce a change to our approach of certain coupon stacking programs. This change will affect the pre ordering of mass quantities of products and the use of mass cut coupons for all of our vendors for the purpose of coupon stacking. In addition, London Drugs has been advised by SC Johnson Company, that no SC Johnson coupon can be combined or stacked with any other coupon, regardless of the wording on the back of their coupons. Unfortunately, both of these areas are impacted due to increasing abuse which cannot be supported, and negatively affects all customers.

Pre-Ordering of Merchandising

Effective immediately, with those products where coupon stacking is permitted, London Drugs stores will only sell shelf quantities of product for the purposes of coupon stacking. As is a longstanding policy, we have always reserved the right to limit quantities and this will be enforced.
We have had increasing pressure from an ever widening number of coupon stackers to pre-order large quantities of products expressly for the purpose of coupon stacking. The requests are not modest: increasingly these order are for cases and half pallet or pallet quantities of merchandise. On top of this, it has been reported that increasingly these large quantities are used for resale, and not for personal consumption.

The manufacturers and London Drugs cannot support this excessive ordering of large quantities, as this is not what coupons were ever intended to provide for customers, and jeopardizes London Drugs ability to get reimbursed for coupons, causing potentially large financial losses for both London Drugs and its suppliers.

SC Johnson Company coupons

London Drugs has been advised by SC Johnson Company, that no SC Johnson coupon can be combined or stacked with any other coupon, regardless of the wording on the back of their coupons. London Drugs attempted to work with the legal counsel representing SC Johnson to alter their wording on their coupons as many other companies have done. Unfortunately, they have made a unilateral decision that because the abuse of coupon stacking has become too widespread on their products, they will not continue to reimburse London Drugs for any coupon they deemed was stacked.
London Drugs is very sorry that these practices have had to change. As one of the very few retailers that have allowed and supported coupon stacking, we’ve worked hard with coupon stacking forums and organizations to make policies clear, and prevent abuse. Despite this approach, the widening abuse has caused these changes in approach. It’s frustrating for London Drugs and the coupon customers who have worked responsibility to maintain the practice to date.

What are your thoughts on this new policy?
