Its that time of year again.  The Tim Hortons smiley face cookies are back.  Buy a smiley face cookie from September 19th to September 25th for only $1 and the entire proceeds go to local charities, hospitals and community programs.  These cookies are pretty popular in our town which results in a shortage.  I don’t know how my times we’ve been to get one for the kids and were told they were sold out.  Its a nice way to get the kids a treat and teach them about donating to charities.

Has anyone used these products before with any success?

I recently received a Kobo Touch eReader as a birthday present and I was ecstatic to get it.  Having the ability to read and carry such a wide variety of books on the go was really exciting for me.

The Kobo Touch has a number of features I was into beyond just books; it can read comics, do some web browsing and has built in Wifi.  Given these features the idea of having an eReader is not solely about the price of the materials you buy for it but it can be a consideration.  With that in mind I decided to take a random sampling of current best selling books according to the Globe and Mail, and price them in store and on Kobo books.

You are welcome to try the same with your favorite bookstore (Kindle, Smashwords, etc.) and I would love to hear the results.

In some cases the price factor is driven up because the book is only available in hardcover right now so you might be able to save if you wait for the paperback.  However, for those that want the immediacy, my sample price total is how much it would cost to get that book now.  Not surprisingly the results favour the eBook but two books, Before I Go to Sleep and State of Wonder were actually more than a dollar higher in price.  A major difference that gave eBooks the was A Dance with Dragons is 10 dollars plus lower in eFormat.

If you find this interesting I might post up another price comparison next month and see if the market is changing.  Perhaps I could price the same books again at that time to and see if it makes a difference to be patient.

Over the past few years Greek yogurt has become very popular in Canada. But how does it differ from regular run of the mill yogurt?

Greek yogurt is creamier and thicker, due to a straining process seperating all the whey from the milk.  Because of this process Greek  doesn’t seperate, such as some cheaper regular yogurts do.

One serving (3/4 cup) of Greek yogurt contains appox. 20 grams of protein while regular yogurt contains about 10. There is slightly less lactose in the Greek variety  as well.

So in the end Greek yogurt has more protein and texture but both are still very good choices for your daily diet.

I prefer my regular run of the mill yogurt.  Greek tastes a bit too thick but I still will eat it.  What do you prefer?

Unfortunately earlier this week the Receiver of Blockbuster was granted permission to liquidate and close the remailing 253 Blockbuster stores.  My heart goes out to those that will soon be jobless.  Our location in my tiny town apparently was the biggest earning Blockbuster in Canada.
